Megan’s Pins

“Megan’s Pins” is an ongoing series of cast and carved wax relief works created using my sister’s childhood pin collection and crayon wax. I take one of the pins and press it into a piece of Model Magic creating a pattern with its basic shape. Once dry, I use the Model Magic as a one-off mold and pour layers of melted crayon wax into it. Later, I peel the Model Magic off, creating a relief of the original pattern, and paint specific areas to bring out features of the original pin and carve into the wax to reveal the layers of colors.

I choose to use crayon wax for these pieces because the process of working with the crayons brings back childhood memories with Megan. We once ‘inventoried”

our large collection of miscellaneous crayons because of their amusing names (Tickle Me Pink, Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown, and Macaroni and Cheese). We sat at the table and swatched each one and wrote down all the names. Now I stand over the stove and watch the colors form as the crayons melt together before pouring them into the prepared mold. The result is a low relief motif of Megan’s pin that I then build on with paint to bring out features of the original pin and carve into to reveal the layers of colored wax.
