“Quilt Squares” is an ongoing series of paintings based on quilts made by my grandma and her grandma. The specific quilts they are known as crazy or crumb quilts: a quilt made of small scrap fabric pieced together in blocks. Laura Baumgartner (my great-great grandmother) started the process of these quilts by collecting fabric scraps from the various sewing projects she did for her family on their farm in rural Illinois. She then sewed these scraps in blocks known as quilt squares. Years later, my grandmother, Rowene Linden, restarted her grandmother’s project by taking these squares and making them into three crazy quilts.
Quilt Squares
These quilts have lived in the blanket baskets of my childhood home, providing warmth for my family. When I moved out, I took one with me and it continues to bring me the comfort of home. Through painting the patterns of these quilts I am able to continue to spread the charm, warmth, and comfort of the quirky patterns I grew up with while spending time with the memories of home associated with them.
